Amphibians and Reptiles
There are few amphibians in Labrador. The only known Amphibians that live within Labrador are the American toad (Anaxyrus americanus), Bluespotted Salamander (Ambystoma laterale), Northern Two-lined Salamander (Eurycea bislineata), Spring peeper (Pseudacris crucifer), Mink Frog (Lithobates septentrionalis), Wood Frog (Lithobates sylvaticus), and Northern Leopard Frog (Lithobates pipiens). There have been no reptiles recorded in Labrador. (Nalcor 2009, Vol. 2B).

Impacts of the project
The flooding associated with Project activity will cause habitat loss for the amphibians present in the valleys around the Lower Churchill River. (Nalcor 2009, Vol. 2B).
mitigation measures proposed by nalcor energy
- Develop protocols to mitigate for disturbance and incidental take and outline how construction would minimize these effects
- Reduce habitat loss effects on key indicator species using mitigation measures such as wetland enhancement and creating new hardwood stands
- Create a herpetile habitat in conjunction with rehabilitation of Project facilities such as access roads, borrow pits, quarries, and transmission line routes
- Relocate herpetiles from locations within the reservoirs to locations of suitable existing habitat, such as engineered wetlands, riparian habitat, and decommissioned facility locations
- Conduct summer and winter ground surveys of wildlife habitat association transects established as part of the baseline to examine changes in distribution and abundance of wildlife
- Confirm the presence of specific spring peeper and salamanders inside and outside the flood zone and assess trapping data pre- and pos-Project in other river systems
- Record and report animal mortalities related to Project activities
(N.B. These are the exact, unmodified mitigation measures proposed by Nalcor Energy themselves) (Joint Panel Review, 2011)
Critique
Comparison was conducted using other projects such as Dunvegan Hydroelectric Project (Alberta), Eastmain-1-A and Rupert Diversion Project (Quebec), Keeyask Generation Project (Manitoba), Lower Mattagami River Hydroelectric Complex Project (Ontario), Romaine River Hydroelectric Project (Quebec).
